adaptable solutions

Industrial design and engineering were key in designing this range of best selling retail scales. IDC managed this complex project right through to the launch, ensuring that all modules were fully compatible.

IDC was asked to design the styling and structural components of a new range of scales for sale worldwide. The scales were for use both by shop staff and directly by customers to self weigh goods.

Avery planned to add new electronics features such as new display and printing technologies, together with network communication. The new design needed to be modular, cover multiple product formats, be lower cost, have improved manufacturing and meet European standards on recycling and food hygiene.

IDC started with the generation of concept ideas and sketches, focusing on the need for modularity of design. From these concepts, the favoured ideas were further developed with the creation of full-size block models.

With the approval of the design came the detailed industrial design and engineering to ensure full modularity, interface with existing electronics, low production costs and performance to standards.

Fully working prototypes were created by IDC Models. The prototypes were built using vacuum cast plastic components and produced in house with 3D CAD rapid prototype models and silicon tooling.

The M-Series scales proved to be a huge commercial success, outselling the previous range and beating all sales forecasts.

"IDC worked as an integral part of a multi-disciplined project team and helped gain acceptance of the key stakeholders in presentation of initial styles and design concepts. For these reasons we have chosen to work with IDC on subsequent projects."
