When Nu Skin introduced a new consumer wellness product with microcurrent skin stimulation similar to medical devices, IDC developed the product to meet the stringent medical standards for FDA approval.
Global beauty and wellness company, Nu Skin, came to IDC to develop an entirely new skin and body care device to add to their ageLOC brand. With an integrated massage and adaptive microcurrent stimulation system, the WellSpa iO was aimed at the home body-contouring and beauty market to improve skin, circulation and overall wellbeing. Although it was to be a consumer product, with its medical microcurrent technology, Nu Skin opted for full FDA approval. Nu Skin depended on IDC’s knowledge of medical products for the crucial role of developing the mechanical, electronic, hardware and firmware elements to meet the high standards of FDA approval.

Working within the parameters of the industrial design, IDC’s engineers were challenged to design a mechanical system to fit the internal dimensions of the product. Components had to be perfectly aligned to silicone touch control features, a speaker, and LED guide lights on the exterior of the product. Metal electrodes on the product’s underside also required precision for optimal electrical contact. The method of outer sealing was crucial, as the casing needed to be fully watertight around the electrodes. Both FEA and theoretical testing was used, and prototypes were tested extensively for water ingress. Design for manufacture was important to ensure best practice in assembling the device for water resistance and the team worked closely with Rosti, the manufacturer in China.

It is IoT enabled to sync with the app via Bluetooth to provide a personalised skin care routine. Nu Skin provided the software for the adaptive microcurrent stimulation system, including an algorithm for the electrodes, and IDC’s team developed the hardware and firmware to control it. The system was set up to enable ongoing firmware updates via Bluetooth. The team undertook performance testing for the device, including verification, and provided all documentation for the medical approvals process. The ageLOC WellSpa iO has enjoyed great success since launch; winning multiple prestigious awards for its innovative body care technology. The fact that it is FDA approved has also been positive for the brand with additional consumer reassurance of its health benefits.
