Design simplicity
for reduced cost

By rationalising the product structure with the clever use of mouldings, parts count was reduced from 49 to 17 with an equivalent cost reduction.

Concord Marlin Lighting looked to IDC for a range of street lighting that would increase profitability and enable the company to move away from purchasing a third party product from Germany.

IDC produced a range of industrial design concepts, and supplied volume break manufacturing costing, highlighting capital spend and unit cost.

The selected design was engineered in 3D CAD and detailed components were generated for production. This was followed by the manufacture of soft tooling and production of working prototypes for testing and evaluation.

IDC developed a visually striking range of street lighting and fittings that are suitable for a cross-section of lighting markets.

By introducing new manufacturing technology and design for manufacture techniques, IDC reduced the component count from 49 to 17 and consequently reduced assembly time and build cost.

The new designs made a direct impact by dramatically increasing unit sales and profit margins.
