Developed completely by IDC, the UK’s lowest power sign light uses an efficient LED light array optimised to deliver industry standard performance with a fraction of the power consumption.

TMP challenged IDC to design a new range of road sign lights, which would use the lowest amount of energy possible.

Current sign lights flood the area with light, which tends to be inefficient as light escapes to areas outside the sign, thus dazzling drivers and passers-by.

In order to produce a better design, IDC analysed competitor products and their light patterns, and found that even with the more energy efficient LED lights, uneven and misdirected light accounted for a large proportion of energy use.

IDC’s design used refined illumination to ensure maximum brightness with light density and spread targeted at the sign to be illuminated, thereby consuming the minimum amount of energy.

The team used specialist high efficiency LEDs coupled with highly focused lenses which are able to direct light to exact points on the sign. IDC's engineers were able to fine-tune LED position to account for a range of sign sizes and shapes.

IDC was also tasked with improving the aesthetics of the road signs, to fit around the LED pattern and work in parallel with the lens optimisation. The challenge here was to ensure light direction and spread were not restricted.

The final design was so efficient, it became the lowest energy road sign in its class.
