FÔLD partnered with IDC to enhance the user experience of their folding pilates bed and IDC delivered a next generation product with Easi-Fold™ system.

A better solution for the home wellness market

FÔLD partnered with IDC to develop a next generation pilates reformer which was easier to use and store at home. They wanted to elevate the aesthetic design of the product with a greater variety of colourways, finishes and the highest engineering quality. With FÔLD’s products manufactured in China, FÔLD was also keen for IDC’s team in China to handle the transfer to manufacturing to simplify the process and save time.

With a large community of FÔLD pilates users, the company had great insight into where improvements could be made, based on the feedback of users. A key area that was identified was the folding mechanism for storing the reformer bed. Users found that the wheels of the current design made the bed too mobile when folding and storing. At 75kg, the reformer is a substantial piece of equipment and the design needed be easy enough for all strengths of users.

A new patented folding mechanism.

IDC researched the way users interacted with the reformer and created a new solution which would bring greater stability. The team designed a progressive unfolding system, with a ‘master and child’ approach to the two sides. This meant that the heavier side easily glided open/closed, while the other end provided stability with rounded feet to grip the floor. When in an upright position, this also provided stability for safety too.

The team addressed the weight challenge by developing a new spring assisted mechanism which makes the folding light and effortless for users. IDC prototyped and tested the new mechanism, with numerous iterations required to strike the right balance between smooth movement and stability. Keeping in mind the quality aims of the product, the team also ensured the solution was soundless, with an upgraded spring holder to keep springs in place and avoid sharp noises.

Providing valuable support on the ground through IDC China

IDC’s team in China played a vital role in the transfer to manufacturing. Using FÔLD’s current manufacturer in China, IDC’s team made several visits to the factory, alone and with FOLD, to ensure the new product was developed to the right specification. These visits helped cement a good relationship with the manufacturer, by building understanding and trust - overcoming any issues with the language barrier. This also brought cost savings and meant the process could be completed in a much shorter time frame.
