IDC Advice Puts Uniwheel Streets Ahead

International product design and development company, IDC (Industrial Design Consultancy), is delighted to have contributed to the development of the Uniwheel; the first electric wheel to be designed and engineered in the UK.

The majority of IDC’s projects see the development of products from concept right through to manufacturing, but some companies take advantage of IDC’s expertise in the form of trouble-shooting and brainstorming sessions which aim to take clients' own developments to another level of success. This is how IDC came to work with Uniwheel.

IDC’s Projects Director, Brian Gough, explains, “Uniwheel had a great vision for their new electric wheel device, with a working prototype and all engineering in place. But the designers didn’t just want it to be good; they wanted it to be an amazing world class product that went beyond the expectations of consumers.”

Uniwheel needed a fresh set of eyes to analyse their existing design and identify where improvements could be made and this is where IDC stepped in. Brian Gough and IDC’s Project Manager, Ryan Fenton, held a day-long session with Uniwheel to fully understand the issues; brainstorm solutions and make recommendations to optimise the design, materials and manufacturing elements too. Gough continues, “We were delighted to hear that from just a single day with the Uniwheel team, all our advice was implemented in the final product, which was launched last week.”

A particular focus of the Uniwheel development was its safety features, which exceed similar two-wheeled hoverboard devices. Eryk Sokolowski, Uniwheel’s Lead Engineer on the project, commented, “We’ve put a lot of effort into this development, making sure that every single safety detail has been thought through. We combined together practicality and innovation to ensure the most comfortable riding experience possible. The fact that it is designed and engineered in the UK also means that it is built to the highest quality and European standards of safety.”
