With a focus on high volume production, IDC was able to improve assembly, at the same as developing a new image for B&Q's own-brand power tools.

B&Q came to IDC with the aim of developing a range of own-brand power tools for high volume production.

The products had to be developed from a selection of existing tools sourced from a variety of manufacturers. A key focus of the project was to design a new image for the mid-price power tools; creating a design signature for the group.

Following careful evaluation of the existing tools, IDC created a series of sketch ideas to develop a consistent design signature across the range.

Final form, detail and key ergonomic elements were developed through sketch models, leading to the production of full size block models used for focus group research.

The final range achieved all its aims - presenting a new design image, while being designed with less mouldings to assist high volume production assembly.
