About / History
Industrial Design Consultancy (IDC) was established in 1972 and its history has included many landmark projects over the years. From early automotive projects through telephones, personal and mainframe computers, domestic appliances and mobile phones, IDC has developed a skill for understanding people, business and technology to create compelling and meaningful product experiences for users and commercial success for our clients.
In the 1970s, IDC’s core business was a mix of domestic appliances, but the technology soon shifted to computers. In 1975 IDC developed our landmark product, the Crossfield 550 Scanner, the world’s first digital scanner controlled by a computer. The success of this product earned IDC our first award and we continued to work on other technological bias projects.
In the 1980s, IDC started to develop as an ‘International Design Consultancy’ establishing clients in India within the realm of domestic appliances. We were able to transform the refrigeration business for Indian client Godrej, by reducing components and cost, and tailoring the design to the specific needs of the market. Word of IDC’s success spread and so did our client portfolio in India and Saudi Arabia.
By the 1990s, computer CAD technology was starting to streamline design processes. We began to focus more on developing medical devices, within such fields as; drug delivery, anaesthesia, surgery and diagnostics etc. Our success is due to our understanding of user needs and regulatory standards that govern this industry. In 2011 we were awarded a Red Dot design award for our Venner Laryngoscope, as well as a Medical Design Excellence Award.
Recent years have seen IDC invest heavily in the latest technology from SLA (Stereolithography) to CNC machining to offer our clients access to technology and rapid prototyping tools that are only available at a handful of organisations in the UK. In 2010 IDC China was established giving us greater knowledge of the Chinese market and access to Chinese clients.
IDC is using our past success to strategize for the future in order to continue offering invaluable advice and designing profitable products for our clients.
