Working with IDC, Dr. Ken Phillips has pioneered a breakthrough technology in head protection for motorcycle riders. Inspired by how the skull protects the brain against linear impact and the scalp protects the brain against rotational forces, the Phillips Helmet has a specially engineered outer membrane with a layer of lubricant to provide controlled slip over a carbon-Kevlar shell. This simulates the protection offered by the head, but for high speed impact onto the road.

The membrane technology provides a 0.1 coefficient of friction compared with 0.55 for a conventional helmet. Through Transport Research Laboratory testing it was found that the helmet showed an improvement of around 60% in protection against rotational forces and 20% in protection against linear acceleration. This equates to a remarkable increase in protection against brain injury caused by rapid rotational movement tearing nerve fibres and blood vessels throughout the brain. Phillips Helmets are currently in negotiation with several helmet manufactures and are also looking to incorporate this technology into industrial safety, police, and military head protection.
