Zydus Cadila was established in 1952 and today is one of India's major pharmaceutical and Indian health care companies. It develops and manufactures a large range of pharmaceuticals as well as diagnostics, herbal, skin care and OTC products.

With Asthma a prevelent issue in India Zydus Cadila recognised a market opportunity to sell a low cost powder inhaler into the local market.

The main aim of the project was to design a product that had market differential, encapsulating:

Improved appearance
Low cost of manufacture
Rapid product development
Ergonomic and easy to use

Process: Key elements of the development included:

Ergonomics, easy to use, folding into a compact product.
Research and Development including CFD to achieve a constant flow of product and take up.
Rapid prototypes vacuum cast test units

Achievement: By undertaking the full development of the inhaler inhouse, IDC were able to achieve the following:

Improved look and feel, providing a unique and acceptable product for users of all ages
Rapid product development (Project start to product trials in 6 months)
Fully working vacuum cast prototypes produced at IDC
