A Multi-Disciplined Approach
At Industrial Design Consultancy (IDC) we believe that in product design, the best products are created when designers and engineers work side by side.
In many organisations this isn’t the case. Frequently the process of concept generation and that of design implementation are often considered as two very different activities, undertaken by two (or sometimes more) separate teams. This approach is illustrated top right.
With this method engineers will frequently complain that the designers’ concepts, won’t work or can’t be made, and the designers complain that engineers don’t respect the design intent and ‘spoil’ their design.
IDC’s collaborative multi-disciplined approach to new product development avoids these problems by ensuring all contributors are involved from the beginning, as illustrated opposite.
At IDC, our team of designers, engineers and project managers work side by side to ensure all the project needs are incorporated at the earliest stage. Our unique and cost-effective approach allows us to quickly identify and reduce the project risks and enables complex briefs to be turned into successful products tailored to their market.

IDC’s Approach to Product Development
Integrating with our Clients
IDC’s approach specifically addresses the problem of harnessing the knowledge and expertise of our clients. By acting as a hub outside of the day to day distractions, IDC can harness the contribution of all key departments without becoming bogged down in company bureaucracy, delays and design by committee.
IDC’s project management systems for product development allow us to plan for the important and timely contribution from all parties within the development team. Maintaining the clarity of purpose and momentum and dynamism associated with a small, focussed team, is the key to successful product development projects.
Our experience over many years has shown that this approach is particularly important for medical device development and product design involving research and development or significant technical challenges.
